So I've had these guys on the back-burner for a bit.  They need some refinement - and maybe Heroscape has enough "knights" and such.

    Awesomeness! Great design so far.

I'll take some time to digest and provide feedback soon. I may even have some already - I'll have to check the boxes in the garage.

What do you think about Cathar Templars?

It would tie into the Spearmen.

    The armies were:

    Torver (new)
    Granite Guardians x3
    Warden 816

    versus

    Concan
    Lord Grayson (new)
    Templars of Kyllian x3 (new)
    Bishop Thaddeus (new)
    Sacred Fusiliers x2

    ==

The Templar army was moving along fairly well though the super-star was Concan who was greatly aided by bonding with the Templars. Concan did give a few boosts to the Templar 'Knights' but eventually he dove in to a horde of Granite Guardians and Torver. It was Concan - on height - that eventually took out Torver.

The Templars themselves are slow - just like the Knights of Weston. The one FORCED MARCH from Lord Grayson was helpful. They become 4/4 when engaged, so they pack a punch in melee if they can survive ranged attacks. They operated well, but might be over-priced. I could see them at 50-points instead of 60, since they have one less member than the Romans - though a base of 4 defense is pretty solid.

Overall, fairly fun - with a feel like the Knights of Weston but different because of different Heroes. They certainly help get Concan off the shelf Smile

The results of two more play-tests are in, and I think that 60-points is perfect for the Templars. They are like a lower-cost version of the Knights of Weston to be sure, and since I'm a fan of Concan - I think they make a great squad for him to bond with.

They also bond with Saylind, which could be interesting.

Not sure if you would take the Templars over the Knights of Weston though. You can have consistent Knight movement with Sir Gilbert (every turn) and you are getting 4 Knights for 70 points. You have back-up Heroes like Finn and Thorgrim to help round out your army (both 80-points).

The Templars are getting a 50/50 shot at one move before initiative if they have Lord Grayson, but also a +1 attack and + 1 defense with Concan (sort of built in Finn + Thorgrim).

So - not sure if we need more "Knights" - but they were fun to play and play-test. There was not much Range on the opposing side, so that will be a big test for them.

W1 Templars of Ascalon - Released Empty RE: Templars playtest

Post  Nomad Mon Jun 03, 2013 7:10 pm

I've theory-scaped the numbers and powers. I can't suggest any improvements. In addition, they could get a move bonus from Count Raymond if he is in their army, plus the benefits from Concan/Saylind and the benefit given to Dupius.

I really like where they are at and I'm ready to start playtesting as well. The only problem is that I only have two squads right now (I'll need to proxy).

Derek, do you have anything to say about the initial design before we officially go to play testing phase?

    My only question is this:

Can we change the name to "Cathar Templars"? The name change would fit in with the Cathar Spearmen who have the same design on the shields, etc. Or maybe even "Knights of *Insert Southern France Town*," from where the Cathars were their strongest.

W1 Templars of Ascalon - Released Empty Name?

Post  Nomad Mon Jun 03, 2013 7:19 pm

    Cathar Templars?
Templars of Toulouse? Or just Toulouse Templars.
    Templars of Minerve?
    Templars of Narbonne?
    Templars of Foix?
    Templars of Carcassonne?

The last five were Cathar castles around 1300.

    What do you think?

I am okay with a name change. I am totally making up "Kyllian" - as it is easier to have poetic-license over something make-believe than something based on Earth history.

And we can drop the "of >insert place<" naming convention. I was following Knights of Weston and other military orders.

    Cathar (knights) of Carcassonne.

Clustered with Concan these guys are going to be tough in Melee. Often having 5 attack with 5 defense, not including height or other bonuses. I am not so sure these guys will be too much less than the KoW, who doesn't have anyone they bond with that ups their defense (that I can think of).

Like where these guys are. We'll have to get a couple more boxes Damon.

We ran 3 tests here with Lord Grayson and Concan and Count Raymond.  They won a semi tight game, pulling away at the end, lost convincingly, and routed the 10th with Marcus.  We both really enjoyed playing them.  The sheild of devotion never came into play.
Need to decide on the name here.

    *bump*

    I'd like to finalize:

    Bishop Thaddeus
    Lord Grayson
    Templars of Kyllian

I believe the main question left is around the Name of the Templars.

W1 Templars of Ascalon - Released Empty Name?

Post  Nomad Wed Jul 17, 2013 10:17 am

I'm good to finalize this squad.

Since Cathars and Templars were two separate orders, I'm reluctant to combine them into one title - it just doesn't fit historically.

So, since they have the same symbolism as the Cathar Spearmen I propose one of these two:

    Cathar Knights
    Knights of Carcassonne

Once we settle on the name, I will start on their card.

Here are some other options that I listed earlier (changing Knights for Templars). These were all Cathar castles in the 1300s.

Knights of Toulouse? Or just Toulouse Knights.
    Knights of Minerve?
    Knights of Narbonne?
    Knights of Foix?

Personally, I am leading towards Knights of Narbonne or Cathar Knights.

What about the TEMPLARS OF ASCALON ?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Ascalon

This was a battle at the end of the First Crusade. I could write up the Bio stating that these Templars were pulled through time to Valhalla during that battle. I think Ascalon has a nice ring to it, though historical accuracy might not be there.

I would like to go with: TEMPLARS OF ASCALON

I'll write up a Bio that reflects their acquisition of magical items once they arrive in Valhalla (Spear of Dagmar, Shields of Devotion and Divine Grimore). This would be similar to Sgt Drake and Kelda receiving items from the Arch-Kyrie.
