    BIO:

During the reign of Caesar Augustus, Rome waged a bloody conflict in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula against the last independent nations of Hispania. The Cantabri were renown mountaineers who, while considered savage and untamable, banded together to hold the Romans at bay. Along with other nations, the Cantabri put up such fierce resistance against Rome that it took ten years and over 50,000 soldiers to subdue the region.

At the end of the conflict, many young families escaped into the Sierra Morena mountain in the Iberian Peninsula under the leadership of Melos Savar. The aptly named “dark range” was dangerous terrain, with a vast wilderness, but the teenage Melos knew that his people could survive off of the land and evade capture. Melos, a few of his younger siblings, and other boys and girls from the fallen tribes took what they could from the forests and, when necessary, raided Roman encampments for tools and weapons. After several years, the young barbarians grew stronger and more bold, eventually staging attacks on both merchant and military caravans traversing the mountain passes. Melos was against this at first but he needed to keep his people fed.

The Romans had paid a heavy price to control Hispania, and when word reached the Senate of a possible Cantabri rebellion, a full cohort of nearly 500 men were sent to the mountains. Overwhelmed, Melos and his kinsmen were forced to surrender. When word reached the Senate that a boy of 14 years of age was leading the barbarians, an ambition consul by the name of Quintus Valerius purchased Melos and his siblings as slaves. Quintus put Melos to work in the silver mines, where the boy crushed rocks with a hammer day and night for over a year. When the consul returned to find the boy had survived and his savage spirit unbroken, he struck a deal with Melos. The barbarian would be given to a gladiator ludis for training and for each year that he survived, one of his tribe would be freed. Melos agreed under the condition that his bloodline be released first.

Training began in earnest and the long, wiry Melos faced much larger but slower men. He was deceptively strong and unpredictable, and he combined the training of his father along with the discipline of the gladiator. Melos survived his first few years but with many injuries. But as promised, consul Valerius released his sister and then the following year his brother.

By the age of 20, Melos’s fame increased moving him from small pit fights into larger arenas. He had adopted the great maul as his weapon of choice and because of that became known as Malleus the Untamed in the arena. The massive hammer was unconventional, and being two-handed meant that he was without a shield. But the 14-pound weapon could crush the arm behind a shield, or do worse if it landed a clean hit upon his foe’s body. For those that closed within grappling range, Melos also wore a blood-red spiked cestus. His violent savagery could overwhelm a less experienced opponent but his wild attacks left him vulnerable to more seasoned gladiators.

After six years in the arena, the now Malleus had freed some but not all of his people. He found his master, Quintus to be ‘as honorable as a Roman could be.’ But unfortunately for Malleus, consul Valerius was assassinated and his replacement, Altus Parinius, refused to keep the same bargain with the barbarian-turned-gladiator. Knowing he had little time, Malleus escaped with several other gladiators now owned by Parinius. They raided the consul’s house and freed other slaves there but not without great losses. Malleus, armed with his great hammer, held the legionaires at bay so that the last of his tribe could escape. With savage rage, he held off more than a dozen soldiers, before several javelins pierced his chest.

When Malleus awoke, he was found himself in Valhalla under the healing powers of the Arch-Kyrie of Einar. His valor and untamed spirit had echoed through time to the General and he offered the barbarian warrior a second chance at life in his army.

For sure, I like the last rendition the best. I'm thinking that GREAT MAUL should allow a re-roll of all dice that did not show a skull . . . very powerful!! He is a hunky gladiator with a huge maul.

Yeah I hope that the mini is a comparable size to the Capuans.  He should be fun.  More play-testing with Gladiators!!!

I was thinking of changing Spoils of Victory ..

    SPOILS OF VICTORY
When Quintus Valerius destroys a figure that is carrying a Glyph, you may transfer all carried Glyphs to this Army Card.

I could also make him a "Wild" Human which would allow him to bond with the Dreadgull Raiders.  Apparently the 'Shoanti' from Pathfinder are savage barbarian warriors, so the Wild might fit in.  I'd probably change his name if he was Wild instead of Rebellious/Disciplined.

And then I would change Tactics to be ...

    ARENA TACTICS
If a figure you control that follows Einar leaves engagement with an opponent's figure that is also engaged with Quintus Valerius, that figure will not take any leaving engagement attacks.

The figure seems popular right now on Heroscapers.com so I was thinking that I should throw him in for SoV sooner rather than later.

BUT I am totally open to adding to NW Customs and/or re-doing the card.

I am going to post this figure up to the Pre-SoV nominations to get some feedback. It's one of those figures with the 'right price and right availability' that I might actually get it to pass : )

I haven't checked the progress of Malleus on SoV nominations . . . how is he doing?

Are you still open to making him part of our customs, or would you prefer to see him SoV? Or both?

We did get in a play-test or two in a couple of weeks ago but he didn't seem to have much of an impact over other gladiators. I like him, but I just want to make sure I use my time productively. My thought would be to put him in a different price range than Prixus, Crixus, Retarius for variability of army builds - yes, this would mean changing some numbers.

I am in Pre-SoV workshopping stages. I did receive some positive feedback and my share of negative. I think Cap-Socrates really doesn't like me for some reason. That guy has nothing positive to say about my submissions and it greatly discourages me.

Because of that, I've really let it go for a few weeks.

I would like to develop the figure overall -- as I think he's a cool figure. Not sure if the Gladiators need a boost ~ especially since we have Richter : ) but let's see what we can do with him.

Hmm - I read through the SoV workshop thread (for the first time ever). Not overly constructive feedback. Rather than type a few paragraphs here, I'll wait until we can talk in person.

I'm thinking that to make him different than other 100 point or so figures in the gladiator mix, we may want to consider changing some numbers, as I mentioned: My thought would be to put him in a different price range than Prixus, Crixus, Retarius for variability of army builds - yes, this would mean changing some numbers.

What do you think about this?

    MALLEUS

    General: Einar
    Planet: Earth

    Species: Human
    Unique Hero
    Class: Gladiator
    Personality: Wild
    Medium 5

    Life: 3
    Move: 5
    Range: 1
    Attack: 3
    Defense: 3
    60 points

    SHIELDBREAKER
Figures attacked by Malleus or by friendly figures adjacent to Malleus cannot roll extra defense dice from any special power on an Army Card or glyph, or from height advantage.

Basically, he is equal to one squad of Capuans with the life of 3, put he is upgraded because of the shieldbreaker power, and then downgraded because there is only one of him. 60 points sounds about right. Yes, drop the second power. Again, I'm just thinking about variability in the gladiator army. I think the Dreadgul build is more open at this point.

Very interesting direction. I had him more of a big "star" hero in my mind so the drop to Shiori power levels has me a little hesitant .. but that is more back-story than game stats.

For Shieldbreaker, I don't know if it should boost other friendly figures. The concept was around his great hammer/maul but I think you are envisioning it here as a battlefield tactic/rally the troops.

The drop to 60 points does allow him to be in Spartacus armies, so he can be inspired to 4/4 stats.

    Spartacus ... 200
    Capuans x3 ... 410
    Malleus .. 470
    Crixus ... 560

At 500-points, you'd probably want Crixus .. but hard to say. Very intriguing idea though.

Thanks for being intrigued by the idea. Again, another 90-110 point Gladiator doesn't seem to add too much to the game. We already have big Gladiator studs with Richter and Spartacus - maybe a lesser one would add something. Just my opinion.

I looked at Army Builds, and with Malleus added in, he consistently pops the Steamroller over the 500-point army build.  Not sure if that is a problem but it is something that I try to target with my designs.  The Dreadgull armies look okay though.

    Army Builds:
    CAPUA
    Gladiators x3 ... 210
    Crixus ... 300
    Malleus ... 350
    Richter ... 520

Yes - those numbers and powers look pretty good to me for starters.

500 points is an arbitrary number. I play far more games at other point values than I do at 500. If you want to keep him at 110 points, that is OK. I just think that there are other Gladiators that already exist in that price range.

If he were 50 points, here are other potential army builds:

    Capuans x4, Priscus, Malleus = 430 points
    Capuans x3, Richter, Malleus = 440 points
Capuans x3, Malleus, Crixus, Retarius = 440 points
    Capuans x3, Malleus, Prixus, Crixus/Retarius = 450 points
    Capuans x3, Spartacus, Malleus = 460 points
Capuans x3, Malleus, Spartacus, Isamu = 470 points
    Capuans x5, Malleus, Prixus = 500 points
Capuans x3, Spartacus, Malleus, Ellessar = 500 points
    Capuans x4, Richter, Malleus = 510 points
Capuans x4, Malleus, Retarius, Crixus = 510 points
    Capuans x4, Malleus, Spartacus = 530 points
    Capuans x3, Spartacus, Malleus, Crixus/Retarius = 550 points

Doh!!! 40-points for a common Gladiator hero with a little range. Not too bad actually.

Maybe we'll shelve Malleus' development for a bit.

In light of Gladiatrix common gladiator ... how about:

    General: Einar
    Planet: Earth

    Species: Human
    Unique Hero
    Class: Gladiator
    Personality: Wild

Figures attacked by Malleus cannot roll extra defense dice from any special power on an Army Card or glyph.

    WILD GLADIATOR INSPIRATION
Anytime you roll the 20-sided die for a Gladiator or Raider Army Card, you may add 1 to your die roll or if Malleus is engaged, add 2 to your die roll.

    Capuan Gladiators x3 ... 210
    Gladiatrix x3 ... 330
    Malleus ... 390

That second power sounds interesting. It would help Dreadguls, Retarius, and the new C3V Gladiatrix.

    GLADIATOR SUPREMACY

    and

    KING OF THE WILD
After a Wild figure you control within 6 clear sight spaces of Malleus rolls the 20-sided die for a special power on its Army Card, you may add 1 to your die roll.

The first power keeps the benefit to Retarius and Gladiatrix, the second power mimics the wording of Elaria the Pale. Malleus would need to be within 6 spaces, but it would benefit the following figures: Dreadguls, Black Wyrmling, Braxas, Drow Chainfighter, Fyorlag Spiders, Jotun, Marrden Hounds, Marro Dividers, Drones, Stingers, Warriors, Me-Burq-Sa, Ogre Warhulk, Sudema, and Tarn Vikings.

Think about all the possible armies he could be a filler in!

Maybe we could limit King of the Wild to Wild figures with a Range 1 .. so that Stingers/Warriors did not get the boost. The 6 space aura helps Dreadguls but then they might move outside of the aura if they hit berserk charge.

    Latest thoughts . . .

Gladiator Inspiration is the name of the power of Spartacus.

The proposed Wild power I put forth may be too encompassing and may be better served to save it for a different figure.

    How about this:

    GLADIATOR SUPREMACY
Anytime you roll the 20-sided die for a Gladiator Army Card, you may add 1 to your die roll, or if Malleus is engaged, you may add 2 to your die roll.

    and

    BERSERKER CHARGE ENHANCEMENT
Add 1 to your die roll when you roll for the Berserker Charge power on any Army Card.

Basically, this is the same as you had before but in two different powers. The Berskerer enhancement would include the Tarn Vikings along with the Dreadguls, but it would only be +1 even if Malleus is engaged. If Valguard is in the army as well, it would be +2.
