bio-To his pirate mates, Merrick became respected for his unquenchable desire for plunder and his fearlessness to achieve the goals of the ship and crew. Merrick quickly rose to become captain of one of the most profitable pirate ships scourging the waters of the Mediterranean. Merrick was always driven with the need for more and increasingly found himself with pint in hand to soothe his passions. The crew dubbed him "Suds," but still loved the loot that their fearless captain won. Over time, rumors whirled about the crew that "Suds" may not really care if he survived their exploits on the high seas.

Do you see this hero having any bonding/synergy with the Pirates common squad?

Nevermind - I just read the pirates common squad card. I would do bonding as well.

I wouldn't do the ruthless power, because the order markers will be on the common squad card.

What do you think about this?

Make his personality Reckless and have the Pirates bond with Reckless Humans. This would allow them to also bond with Martial LaHire and Evar Scarcarver. I really like this:D 

agreed with ruthless. Pirates a bit selfish so I thought ruthless an interesting idea- help him out towards the end game. I think there are some other pirate heroes that might have more to offer game wise, so I thought a little twist might be OK, tells the opponent where you got your markers unless you need an extra attack die from him. All designs from me are willing to complete changes so if you have pirate thematic ideas throw them out.

Thinking about the Ruthless power and his bonding I agree the power should change. Any ideas on how to up his attack as a round progresses (and maybe lower his defense if Caught Unawares was dropped?) Or would a different route be warranted?

How about dropping the unawares part and going with something like

Ruthless (perhaps a different name)
For every revealed Order Marker on a Pirate card you control, add 1 to ?'s attack and subtract 1 from his defense.

Only power and up his defense to 5 attack at 3.

I really like where this is leading. As the round goes on, he gains attack but loses defense because he is Reckless. Since his personality is Ruthless, how about?

I to initially thought reckless but wasn't sure of Martial La Hires power name, which is Reckless Second Swing, so I like Reckless.

If we want to keep this guy being able to bond with the pirates, keeping his personality as reckless is needed. So I am not sure having Reckless as the power name is appropriate. We could either change the Pirates to bond with Ruthless personalities (only Red Skull), or leave it as Reckless bonding (Martial La Hire, Evar Scarcarver, Manauvi). How about

Daring
Brash

I kind of like Brash or Daring.

How about "Brazen Brawler"?

OP updated. Tentative name of Captain "Black" Jack. attack upped to 3 and defense to 4, life at 5. Maybe in the 70-80 point range.

So if you had all 4 order markers on pirates he would have an attack of 7 and a defense of 0, is that right?

It is for each revealed marker on a pirate card, so if the X marker is somehow revealed and after the 3rd order marker is revealed on a pirate card, you are correct. After 1 order marker he will be 4 attack 3 defense, after 2 OM's he will be 5 attack 2 defense, after 3 OM's 6 attack and 1 defense, if a 4th OM can be revealed 7 attack 0 defense.

Should his base attack start at 2, or is this representative of a reckless pirate willing to go above and beyond to get the victory?

How about Reckless Abandon for the power name?

I like both Reckless Abandon and Reckless Onslaught. Best options so far in my opinion. The Abandon part hints to the decrease in defense.

Leaning towards reckless abandon and name change to captain bones. OP reflects leanings.

A cross between Captain Kirk and Doctor Bones from Startrek?

A poor name change, will definitely look for something else. I looked at the miniature and realized one of his hands is skeletal.

Merciless Merrick? (Merrick is ruler of the sea) Kind of a Deadeye Dan name.

How about . . .

Suds Merrick? (a real life pirate - and it fits the scuplt, although Suds pirated the Hudson River)
Captain Merrick?
Barbar Merrick? (to fit in with the barbary coast pirates that fit the theme of the other sculpts)
Tripoli Jack? (Hmm, nice)
Marrakesh Merrick? (personally my favorite - Marrakesh was the most important Barbary pirate city back in the day)
Merrick the Corsair? (liking it)

Don't worry, many of the captains of the barbary pirates were European traitors.

what about my suggestions?

I like the ties to historical stuff. Suds Merrick, Tripoli Jack, and Marrakesh Merrick are my favorites. Suds fits the sculpt but Marrakesh is pretty cool.
