Character Bio:
A branch of the Knights Templar, these knights of Earth distinguished themselves during the Third Crusade at the siege of Ascalon in 1153. Ascalon was Fatimid Egypt's greatest and most important frontier fortress and after a long battle, the Templars succeeded at taking this key stronghold. During the battle, a group of knights under the command of Baron Sebastian de la Croix held a key entry point into the city. The knights pushed back the superior numbers of the Fatimids and despite the swarm of enemy soldiers, refused to yield their position. Without the valor and determination of these knights, the fortress would not have fallen. Following the victory, those knights were dubbed the Templars of Ascalon.
Years later when the Templars of Ascalon were returning home, they came to the aid of a large caravan. The raiders were beastial men with horrific mounts like giant wolves and it was clear to the Templars that these foul creatures were not of this world. The Templars engaged the unknown enemy and learned that the caravan was transporting sacred relics. The caravan was led by Bishop Thaddeus and he requested that the Templars follow the monsters through the portal to retrieve the relics. Without hesitation the Templars, along with Bishop Thaddeus and Baron Sebastian advanced through the portal and found themselves transported to Valhalla.
The knights found themselves in the middle of a great battle with a swarm of Grut Orcs and to their amazement the great dragon, Mimring. Fighting against the blue skinned Orcs and the scaled drake were members of the Roman Legion and other strangers but at least they were human. Despite the unearthly nature of their enemies, the Templars pushed into the fray. With the knights holding back Orcs, Baron Sebastian harried the dragon with the help of the Romans. Because of the tenacity of the Templars, the captive members of the caravan were able to return through the portal. But for Sebastian and the remaining Templars of Ascalon it was too late and the gateway closed behind them.
The Roman Legion was able to converse in Latin with Bishop Thaddeus. Shortly after the battle, a delegation of Kyrie from General Einar arrived and a basic alliance was formed. A few days later, the Templars, along with Thaddeus and Sebastian, met with Einar himself and learned about the conflict on Valhalla. At the request of Einar, the Templars joined the ranks of soldiers fighting against Utgar and Valkrill, as protecting Earth from the potential dimensional attacks of these outworlders was part of the code that all of the knights had sworn.
In return for their help, Einar entrusted the leaders of the Templars with two gifts. Baron Sebastian received the Banner of Dagmar, an enchanted polearm that increased the alertness and awareness of his followers. For Bishop Thaddeus, Einar enchanted a magical tome to capture the essence and valor of the great deeds of devout warriors. This Divine Grimore could channel the mystical energies into the faithful that followed the Bishop into battle.
