Torneo de Cinco De Mayo – Round 2

    Battle 5 @ Sirocco
Agents (Damon): Microcorp Agents x3, Agent Skahen, Major Q10, Otonashi= 580.
Roman Archers (Damon #1): Roman Archers x4, Zelrig, Tandros Kreel, Izumi Samurai = 585.

Dad let Jacob take the Agents.

Rd 1: Otonashi sprinted out of the start zone and landed on the Attack +1 glyph only to get killed by an Archer from 6 spaces away. Q-10 climbed up the right side hill. The Archers killed a Micro.

Rd 2: Dad went with all Romans this round, killing two Micro, getting the glyph, and rolling 4/6 skull volley to put three wound on Q-10. The Micro failed two attacks, but Q-10 did take out a couple of Archers with his special attack.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0385
Looks like Q10 might be in trouble

Rd 3: The Izumi Samurai charged up the hill to engage Q-10. Q-10 rolled 2/4 skulls with his Special, but the Izumi rolled 3/5 shields for a counter strike wound. Q-10 is dead! After the Micro blocked 3 attacks from the Archers, they killed two Archers on the hill to the left. The Roman Archers then killed two Micro on the right hill. The Micro killed the Archer on the glyph, but failed on two attacks on the Izumi in the middle of the map (on shadow, next to a palm tree). The samurai rolled 9 shields in 14 dice!

Rd 4: The Micro jumped on the Attack +1 glyph and killed two more Romans. The Izumi moved to engage. Skahen killed the Izumi that was closing in on her. Tandros came out to play, firing 2 skulls to kill the Micro on the glyph. A Micro failed an attack on the Izumi, and then chose to attack the engaged Izumi. A Roman Archer killed a Micro, who whiffed with 5 defensive dice to close the round.

Rd 5: Turn 1 – Skahen and the Izumi fail their attacks. Turn 2 – Skahen takes out an Izumi, Tandros snags the +1 Attack glyph. Turn 3 – A Micro kills an Archer, but then another Micro dies from a counter-striking Izumi. A squad of Roman Archers jump into the middle of the map and fire a 4/6 skull volley on Skahen, who rolled one shield to dodge the attack.

Rd 6: Skahen double attack two of the Romans in the middle of the map and killed them both. Zelrig finally gets into the action by flying over and killing the last Micro. Skahen takes aim at Zelrig and puts a wound on the red dragon. Zelrig engages Skahen and rolls 4/5 skulls for 2 wounds. Skahen puts another wound on Zelrig. Zelrig rolls 4/5 skulls again to kill Skahen and end the battle.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0386
Zelrig looks like he is hungry for a Skahen snack

    Final Score
The Roman Archers are a surprising 2-0 in the tournament. 1 Izumi, Tandros, 2-wounded Zelrig, and 2 Roman Archers = 278 points left.

    Battle 6 @ Sidewinder
    Zombies (Jacob #2): Zombies of Morindan x4, Zombie Hulk x4, Gald'rabok = 590.
Varkaanans (Damon #4): Varkaanan Greyspears, Varkaanan Quickblades, Varkaanan Darkclaws, Varkaanan Swiftfangs, Arktos, Sylvan Animae x2 = 585.

Rd 1: A Greyspear managed to kill a zombie. The only other action was the Varkaanan’s landed on the Unique Attack +1 glyph and a zombie landed on the Common Attack +1 glyph. Good glyphs for both armies.

Rd 2: A Swiftfang struck first, killing ZHulk#1. Jacob lost OM#1. A Quickblade put 2 wounds on ZHulk#2. A zombie took out a Swiftfang, bringing ZHulk#1 back into the fray, while other zombies killed another Swiftfang and a Quickblade. A Greyspear and Swiftfangs killed ZHulks#1 and #3. A Zombie and ZHulk#2 killed the rest of the Quickblades, but couldn’t bring back their buddies because they wouldn’t fit.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0378
Zombie Hulks rise from the ashes and mess with the wolfpack

Rd 3: A zombie took out the last Swiftfang, bringing ZHulk#1 back into the battle again, and Dad lost his OM#1. A zombie kills a Greyspear. Arktos and the Greyspears launch their spears to kill 3 zombies. A zombie snuck in and killed a Darkclaw, bringing ZHulk#3 back from the undead. This was getting really bothersome to dad – killing the Hulks only to have them come back. Dad decided to focus his efforts on the little zombies and deal with the hulksters later. Darkclaws and Greyspears kill 3 zombies.

Rd 4: Arktos and the Greyspears team up to kill 2 ZHulks and put a wound on another. A ZHulk kills a Greyspear, bringing one of his twins back again. Arktos took out a zombie, while the Greyspears kill on ZHulk and put two wounds on another. Jacob lost an OM. A zombie had snuck into Dad’s start zone and the Sylvan Animae failed in two attacks on it.

Rd 5: A Greyspear killed a ZHulk. Jacob’s attacks failed. Greyspears and Darkclaws combined to roll 14/16 skulls to kill the last 2 ZHulks. Jacob lost another OM. The Sylvan fail 3 attacks on that stubborn zombie in the start zone.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0379
The Animae have trouble with a zombie in their start zone

Rd 6: Arktos killed the last two zombies in the first two turns. The Darkclaws charged into Jacob’s start zone to put 3 wounds on Gald’rabok, who then killed one of the Darkclaws.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0380
    Gald'rabok's last stand

Rd 7: Arktos and Gald’rabok exchanged a few wounds. Arktos drank the healing potion to get to full life. Gald’rabok left engagements to get to the healing ice, but took his last wound and died.

    Final Score
The Wolfpack army had 265 points left with 2 squads of Sylvan, Arktos, a Darkclaw, and 2 Greyspears.

    Customs Notes
The Sylvan Animae couldn’t provide any offense help in 5 attacks, but they did boost the wolfpack out of the start zone. Gald’rabok didn’t fair real well either. He took a couple of wounds before even getting into the action. The Ice Devil tried his special attack once, but only rolled one skull, which was easily defended by the three wolves.

    Battle 7 @ Marr Highway
Shades (Jacob): Shades Of Bleakwoode x4, Othkurik the Black Dragon, Marro Warriors = 590.
MacDirks (Jacob #3): Thorgrim the Viking Champion, Finn the Viking Champion, Eldgrim The Viking Champion, Alastair MacDirk, MacDirk Warriors x3, Tarn Viking Warriors = 590.

Jacob let Dad play with the MacDirks. Dad was more than happy to take one of his favorite armies.

Rd 1: Dad overextended with Eldgrim to get to a glyph, which turned out to be a Brandar dud. Othkurik moved out first followed by the Shades, who were able to put a wound on Eldgrim.

Rd 2: A Shade landed on the Common Attack +1 glyph, but they failed to Soul Devour Eldgrim or wound him in a couple of attacks. Dad moved forward Allistar and some Macs. A Shade whiffed its attack on a Mac. The Macs kill the Shade on the glyph. The Shades fail 2 attempts at Soul Devour. Eldgrim jumps on the Common Attack +1 glyph while the Macs kill two Shades.

Rd 3: Shades and MacDirks battled it out this round . . . 2 Macs fell and Alastair picked up three wounds while 3 Shades bit the dust.

Rd 4: Dad won initiative – Alistair and the boosted Macs promptly took out three Shades. The Shades could only kill one Mac on their turn. Finn killed a Shade with a 3/3 skull roll. The Macs then went into fury mode, rolling 6/8, 6/7 and 6/7 to decimate the remaining Shades and kill Othkurik in one swing. Jacob lost his OMs and Dad moved the Macs toward the Marro Warriors.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0382
Alastair watches as Finn and the MacDirks roll down the highway

Rd 5: The Marro Warriors went first, taking out 2 MacDirks. A Mac rolled 4/7 to kill a MW. The MW’s killed a Mac, but Finn and the crazy Scots wiped out the remaining Marro’s in one turn.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0384
Finn and the Macs finish off the Marro Warriors

    Final Score
Dad had Thorgrim, Finn, the Tarns, 3 MacDirks, a twice-wounded Eldgrim, and a Alastair with 4 wounds left on the battlefield for a total of 317 points. The Shades are done while the MacDirks get to battle on in the next round.

    Battle 8 @ Volcalla Rift
Monks (Damon): Eilan Sidhe x2.5, Syvarris, Shaolin Monks x3, Master Win Chiu Woo = 580.
    Soulborgs (Jacob): Deathwalker 8000, Mistress Isadora, Alpha-Prime Enforcer x4, Zettian Guards, Deathreavers x2, Warden 816 = 580.

Rd 1: A Rat jumped on the Summoning glyph on turn 2, but only chose to bring up another Rat. The Rats were able to tie down Syvarris in front of Dad’s start zone and put a wound on him. The Sidhe moved out but failed their attacks. The Zettian Guards and Enforcers moved forward.

Rd 2: The Monks and Syvarris each killed a Rat, but the Sidhe failed 2 attacks. The Zettians stayed back and killed three Monks from long range while the Enforcers continued to march closer.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0381
The Zettians perch on a hill and fire away

Rd 3: Dad won initiative, but the Monks failed on all of their attacks. The Zettians killed 3 more Monks this round while an Enforcer made it to Syvarris and killed him. A Sidhe did manage to take out a Rat while the Monks cleaned up on two Enforcers.

Rd 4: Dad went with all Sidhe this round and was able to take out another Enforcer and a solitary Rat. Jacob continued to go with the Zettians and was able to kill a couple of Sidhe.

Rd 5: The Sidhe continued to use through the green and one was able to make it into Jacob’s startzone, but he failed the attack on Warden816. Another Sidhe took out the last Enforcer. The Zettians failed. Master Woo leaped to kill a Rat. Mistress Isadora failed to imprison and failed in her attack on the Sidhe in Jacob’s start zone. DW8000 closed the round by killing a Monk from long range.

Rd 6: After 3 ties rolling the 20-sider (1 in 8000 probability), Jacob finally won initiative. Isadora killed the Sidhe. Master Woo moved to the road and then blocked DW8000’s attack. Sidhe fail on their attacks on DW and Isadora, who then kills a Sidhe. The last Sidhe fails its attack on DW.

Rd 7: The Sidhe, Master Woo, and the Monks took turns this round and only the Monks were able to do anything by putting 2 wounds on Isadora. The Mistress injured Woo for a wound, DW8000 killed the last Sidhe, but then whiffs on a Monk.

It’s down to Isadora, DW8000, Warden 816, and a Reaver against two Monks and their Master.

Rd 8: DW8000 fired a 2/3 skull shot to kill a Monk and then fired 3/3 on the last Monk, who defended with a 3/5 shield roll. That last Monk killed Isadora. Jacob rolled 3/3 with DW8000 on that last Monk, but Dad rolled 3/4 shields to defend. That last Monk leapt up into DW8000’s grill and hit him with 2 skulls. The soulborg rolled 1/8 shields and died! GO LAST MONK! Warden fires from range with 3 skulls to kill that last Monk. Woo ends the round by killing a Rat, but takes a wound himself from the lava field.

It’s the Zettian Guards, Warden, and Rat against Master Woo.

Rd 9: The Zettians return to action, firing at Woo for 2 wounds. Woo leaps up to kill a Zettian. Woo blocked an attack and then hit the last Zettian with 3 skulls and death. The Warden saunters a bit closer, rolls 2 skulls from range, and kills Woo to end the battle.

    Final Score:
Jacob won with 110 points left having the Warden and one Reaver left in play. The Monks are done while the Soulborgs live to play another day.

First off ... I *love* this picture!!!!

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 SkahenZelrigcropresize

These are some titantic battles, folks!!!  I was pulling for the Shades - and I did predict that Jacob would snag Zelrig in Battle # 1 - but it is too bad they couldn't possess Allistair : P  But I think the MacDirks are awesome - so I am glad they are rolling through the competition.

For Zombies versus Wolfen - wow! that sounds like a great battle, and I didn't see how great it would be for the Zombie Hulks to Rise! from the Varkaanans.  Arktos is really strong and I think this tourney is a good way to test the Big Puppies.

But I do have to mention, that poor Q-10 was murdered, not destroyed.  Counter-Strike doesn't work against Special Attacks, so if the Izumi wounded him in response to Wrist Rockets - the Merciful Soulborg should still be alive : (

And it is cool for the Roman Archers to be rockin' it!!!

Varkaanans (Damon #4): Varkaanan Greyspears, Varkaanan Quickblades, Varkaanan Darkclaws, Varkaanan Swiftfangs, Arktos, Sylvan Animae x2 = 585.

I predict the "Unique" Varkaanans are going to roll this one.

    Loser’s Bracket

    Zombies (Jacob #2): Zombies of Morindan x4, Zombie Hulk x4, Gald'rabok = 590.
Agents (Damon): Microcorp Agents x3, Agent Skahen, Major Q10, Otonashi= 580.

I think I am going with Zombies and I am curious if the Zombies were able to hide their "head-hit-zones" against all those bullets : P

    Battle 11 @ Sirocco
    Soulborgs (Jacob): Deathwalker 8000, Mistress Isadora, Alpha-Prime Enforcer x4, Zettian Guards, Deathreavers x2, Warden 816 = 580.

I have to go with the MacDirks on this one.  Those crazy bonus Attack dice will cleave through the Deathwalker team.

A very good question that you bring up. But since this battle was about a month ago, I'm afraid I can't remember if I counter-struck his special attack or if it was a normal attack. Let's not tell Jacob. I wouldn't have mattered - the Roman Archers won by a huge margin.

Jacob did his best to hide the heads, but fortunately there are some wide shooting allies between the glaciers and the ruins . . . if you can get there.

Cinco de Mayo Tournament - Round 3

    Battle 9 @ Volcalla Rift
Roman Archers (Damon #1): Roman Archers x4, Zelrig, Tandros Kreel, Izumi Samurai = 585.
Varkaanans (Damon #4): Varkaanan Greyspears, Varkaanan Quickblades, Varkaanan Darkclaws, Varkaanan Swiftfangs, Arktos, Sylvan Animae x2 = 585.

Dad took the Roman Archer team, letting Jacob take the Varkaanans.

Rd 1: An Archer took out a Swiftfang and the Izumi killed a Quickblade and a Greyspear, each with rolls of 1/2 skulls. A Quickblade smashed an Archer and the Greyspears got lucky killing two Izumi when the both rolled 0/5 shields in defense.

Rd 2: After the Archers failed on 3 attacks, Arktos went after the last Izumi rolling 1/4 skulls. The Samurai rolled 4/5 defense for 3 wounds on Arktos. The Swiftfangs took care of an Archer and took control of the Move +2 glyph. The Archers killed a Quickblade and then the Greyspears killed 2 Archers. Zelrig took a turn and rolled 2/3 skulls with his special attack targeting his Izumi – Arktos whiffed and died, as did a Greyspear and a Swiftfang. Only the Samurai survived. The Darkclaws and Greyspears combined to put 2 wounds on Zelrig and 2 wounds on Tandros.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0387
Izumi Counterstrikes as Zelrig prepares to Fire away

Rd 3: Zelrig clobbered a Darkclaw. Dad blocked 4 attacks from Darkclaws and Swiftfangs. Zelrig rolled 4/4 skulls to kill another Darkclaw. A Quickblade was able to put 2 more wounds on Zelrig. Tandros failed his attack. A Darkclaw rolled 4/5 skulls on Tandros for 4 wounds and then the Greyspears finished Tandros off and put the 5th wound on Zelrig. Ouch.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0388
No Tandros magic this battle as he prepares to meet his fate

Rd 4: Greyspears and a Swiftfang teamed up to kill 2 Archers and Zelrig. The Archers volleyed for 4 skulls to kill a Greyspear. A Quickblade sliced another Roman, and then the Romans failed on 3 attacks. 2 more Romans fall. The Romans take out the last Greyspear.

Rd 5: Romans take out the last Quickblade and a Swiftfang this round while the Darkclaws killed a couple of Romans.

2 squads of Sylvan, a Darkclaw, and a Swiftfang were up against 1 Roman Archer and 1 Izumi Samurai.

Rd 6: The wolfpack wins initiative and a Darkclaw kills the Archer. The Izumi slices the Darkclaw dead. The Swiftfang decides to stay on the Move +2 glyph while the Izumi charges toward the Animae in the wolfpack start zone.

Rd 7: The Samurai kills a Sylvan. The Sylvan rolls 1/2 skulls, but it is blocked with 1/5 defense. The next Sylvan rolls 1/2 skulls and the Samurai whiffs to end the battle.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0389
The Sylvan Animae are forced into battle . . . and they end the battle

    Final Score:
The Wolfpack had 77 points left in 5 Sylvan Animae and a Swiftfang. The Varkanaans are the sole undefeated team and will wait to see who survives to play them in the championship.

    Battle 10 @ Sidewinder
    Zombies (Jacob #2): Zombies of Morindan x4, Zombie Hulk x4, Gald'rabok = 590.
Agents (Damon): Microcorp Agents x3, Agent Skahen, Major Q10, Otonashi= 580.

Rd 1: Otonashi sprinted out of the start zone to land on the Defense +2 glyph. The Microcorp killed ZHulk #1 in three attacks. A zombie took control of the Defense +1 glyph on the other side of the map.

Rd 2: The zombies finally closed the ground on the agents, killing Otonashi and a Microcorp. A zombie took control of the Defense +2 glyph, but failed an onslaught and three attacks. The Microcorp failed on 7 attacks, but were able to kill 2 zombies despite their rolling of 6 defense dice.

Rd 3: ZHulk#2 killed a Micro and then the zombies rolled a 5/6 skull onslaught to kill another. Two zombies rise again. The Micro failed in 3 attacks. ZHulk#3 and another onslaught killed two more Mircos. The corp took out 3 zombies as Jacob rolled 1 shield out of 18 total dice. A micro put his magic pants on in the face of a Hulk attack while another onslaught put two wounds on Skahen. The corp killed 2 zombies (one was on the Defense +1 glyph) and put two wounds on ZHulk#3.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0393
Skahen looks to be in a zombie pickle

Rd 4: The Micro fail with 6 attacks, but they grabbed the +1 glyph for a couple of turns. Q10 used his wrist rocket to kill a zombie on turn three. The ZHulks and zombies were only able to kill 2 micro the entire round, but they rebirthed a zombie on the Def. +1 glyph to close the round.

Rd 5: Q10 fired away on all three turns, but his rockets were dodged every time. The zombies continued rolling through Dad’s army, killing a micro, Skahen, and putting 2 wounds on Q10.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0394
With the Horde coming from all directions, Q10 was shaking in his boots

Rd 6: The micro failed their attacks. The zombies onslaughted Q10 for the kill. Dad lost an OM. ZHulk#2 killed the last micro to end the battle.

    Final Score
Jacob lost a total of 60 points ending the game with 530 on the map. What a blow out. The Zombie horde was just too much for the agents. Penetrating +3 defense for most of the battle was just too much for Dad to overcome.

    Battle 11 @ Sirocco
    Soulborgs (Jacob): Deathwalker 8000, Mistress Isadora, Alpha-Prime Enforcer x4, Zettian Guards, Deathreavers x2, Warden 816 = 580.
MacDirks (Jacob #3): Thorgrim the Viking Champion, Finn the Viking Champion, Eldgrim The Viking Champion, Alastair MacDirk, MacDirk Warriors x3, Tarn Viking Warriors = 590.

Jacob let Dad take the MacDirks in this match.

Rd 1: Eldgrim over-extended to land on the Wound glyph. The rats moved out on the first two OMs – putting a wound on Eldgrim and killing a MacDirk. Alastair killed a rat with over-extend. The Zettian Guards ended the round by killing Eldgrim and a MacDirk on the right side of the map.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0391
"How am I going to get out of this one?"

Rd 2: Alastair used overextend but failed his attack on a rat. The MacDirks went crazy rolling 11/12 skulls to kill an Enforcer and 2 rats. The Zetts put another wound on Alastair while an Enforcer killed a Mac on the left hill. Alastair and the Macs combined to kill a couple of rats, including the one on Wound. The Zetts and an Enforcer fail in their attacks on Alastair, but another Enforcer took out another Mac. A Zett rolled 1/8 shields to die at the hands of Mac while another Mac jumped on the Wound glyph. Jacob ended the round by having his Zett kill the glyph Mac.

Rd 3: The Enforcers killed 2 more Macs on the right hill. Alastair safely left engagement but whiffed on his attack against an Enforcer. The Mistress failed on her imprisonment roll and her attack on Alastair, but an Enforcer added another wound on him. Alastair whiffed again on an Enforcer, rolling 6 shields, and 2 Macs failed their attacks. Mistress imprisoned a Mac and killed another while an Enforcer killed a Mac as well. Alastair killed an Enforcer while a Mac sprinted into Jacob’s start zone to put a wound on Warden 816.

Rd 4: Mistress failed to imprison Alastair and failed her attack on Finn. She killed a Mac with interrogation and then the Enforcers killed the Mac in Jacob’s start zone and put another wound on Alastair for his fifth. Dad was down to one Mac, who retreated to the edge of his start zone while Alastair killed an Enforcer. Mistress failed imprisonment and attack. Alastair killed the last Zettian Guard on the right hill. Mistress failed both rolls again, but landed on the Wound glyph. The Enforcer killed Alastair. Finn failed his attack. Thorgrim got a wound from the glyph to close the round.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0392
Finn is hoping Isadora will be his Mistress . . .

Rd 5: The Warden put a wound on Finn but the last Enforcer failed its attack. Finn rolled 2 skulls to kill that last Enforcer. Warden put another wound on Finn with his Eviseraxe. Finn whiffed his attack. Mistress imprisoned Finn. Thorgrim moved. Mistress attempts interrogation of Finn but rolled a blank so Finn popped up right next to her. Thorgrim earned another wound from the glyph.

Rd 6: Mistress fails both attempts on Finn. Thorgrim picks up a useless Brandar’s chest glyph while the last Mac moved to height. Mistress put a wound on Finn for a total of 3. The Tarns move. The Warden kills Finn, whose spirit goes on the Tarn. The Tarns get a Berserker Charge to move adjacent to Mistress and Warden. A 5/5 skull roll kills Mistress but the attacks on Warden fail.

To start the 7th round, Dad had a 2 wound Thorgrim, a Mac, and the squad of Tarns. Jacob had DW8000, a once-wounded Warden, and a Rat. It will be close.

Rd 7: Dad and the Macs won initiative and went with the Tarns. A 4/4 skull roll killed Warden, a 4/5 skull roll killed DW8000 who only rolled one shield, and a 2/5 skull roll killed the last rat. Battle over just like that. Jacob was wondering what just happened.

    Final Score
The Macs had 110 points left and stayed alive in the tournament. The Soulborgs were stunned and eliminated.

    Customs Note
The Enforcers were very good. Mistress played one of her most impactful games with a couple of imprisonments and a few wounds/kills.

    Battle 12 @ Volcalla Rift
    Zombies (Jacob #2): Zombies of Morindan x4, Zombie Hulk x4, Gald'rabok = 590.
MacDirks (Jacob #3): Thorgrim the Viking Champion, Finn the Viking Champion, Eldgrim The Viking Champion, Alastair MacDirk, MacDirk Warriors x3, Tarn Viking Warriors = 590.

Jacob decided to play with his Zombies and let Dad take the MacDirks again.

Have you ever played a 590 point battle in less than 10 minutes? We did.

Rd 1: Turn 2 – Alastair rolled 4/5 to kill a zombie, over-extended and rolled 4/5 to kill ZHulk#1. Jacob lost an OM. The Macs killed 2 zombies.

Rd 2: Turn 1 – Alastair killed 2 zombies using over-extend while a Mac killed another. ZHulk#2 added fuel to the fire by putting 2 more wounds on Alastair. Turn 2 – Alastair left engagement for his 5th wound to hide safely behind his Macs. The Macs rolled 5/7, 6/7, and 4/7 skulls to kill 2 ZHulks and a zombie. Jacob lost 2 OMs. Turn 3 – two more zombies died.

Rd 3: Turn 1 – Mac rolls of 6/7 and 4/7 kill 2 zombies. ZHulk#4 killed a Mac for Dad’s first casualty. Turn 2 – The Macs rolled into Jacob’s start zone, killing 2 more zombies and the last ZHulk. Jacob lost on OM. Turn 3 – A Mac landed on the Attack +1 glyph while the other 3 rolled 9/24 skulls to kill Gald’rabok. Battle over, and yes, it took less than 10 minutes.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0395
The MacDirks are getting ready to charge the Zombie's start zone - sorry, it happened so fast . . . I didn't have time to get other pics.

    Final Score
With one dead Mac and 5 wounds on Alastair, Dad had 552 points left. Jacob got to take a total of 4 turns in this battle and he lost 4 turns. The MacDirks were simply awesome!

    Customs Notes
Gald’rabok was killed before he could even imagine the highland fury that was coming his way.

    Cinco de Mayo Tournament, Semifinals

    Battle 13 @ Sirocco
Roman Archers (Damon #1): Roman Archers x4, Zelrig, Tandros Kreel, Izumi Samurai = 585.
MacDirks (Jacob #3): Thorgrim the Viking Champion, Finn the Viking Champion, Eldgrim The Viking Champion, Alastair MacDirk, MacDirk Warriors x3, Tarn Viking Warriors = 590.

Jacob finally gets to play with his MacDirks again. The winner gets to face the Varkaanans in the championship.

Rd 1: A MacDirk lands on the Negation Glyph. Will Zelrig get stripped of her powers? Jacob rolled a 3 – phew. Alastair picked up the Whetstone of Venom. Dad moved Roman Archers to the hills and then moved out the Izumi. Only one attack, which an Archer blocked with a roll of 1/1 shield.

Rd 2: Turn 1 - Alastair took two wounds using over-extend and taking a counter strike, but he killed an Izumi. The Macs easily slaughtered 3 Archers. The two Izumi killed 2 Macs. Turn 2 - Thorgrim moved to the right hill and 2 Macs dispatched 2 more Archers. The Archers used their volley and rolled 4/6 skulls to put 3 wounds on Alastair. Turn 3 -With only one life left, Alastair retreated to the back side of the hill on the right. A Mac hit Zelrig with a 3/7 roll, but Zelrig blocked it with a perfect 3/3 shield roll. Another Archer and an Izumi fell to the Macs. The Archers ended the round by taking out the Mac next to Zelrig.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0396
Alastair is hiding in the shadows, on the hill, behind the crags, behind his Macs . . .

Rd 3: Turn 1 - Alastair left his hiding place to enter the fray thinking it would be easy to kill an Archer who was holding down his Macs. Alastair rolled 0/5. Oops. That could be a game changer. Disgusted, Jacob left engagement with his 2 Macs, one died while the other sprinted into Dad’s start zone and put three wounds on Tandros. A 3rd Mac killed a Roman. Zelrig flew up to engage Alastair and only rolled 1/4 skulls, but Alastair whiffed in defense and died. Yep – it was a game changer. Even though Jacob had killed a bunch more figures, he had a look of defeat on his face. Turn 2 - Thorgrim picked up the Whetstone and put a wound on Zelrig, and then 2 more wounds by using the glyph. The Macs failed in their attacks on Zelrig and Tandros. Zelrig whiffed with his Special Attack. Turn 3 – three Macs whiffed their attacks but a fourth took out another Archer. Zelrig used his fire to kill a Mac.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0397
Alastair has that "what have I gotten myself into" look on his face

Rd 4: Turn 1 – Zelrig killed a Mac. Thorgrim and a Mac whiffed their attacks and an Archer blocked another. The dice were turning. Turn 2 – The remaining Archers killed a Mac in Dad’s start zone. Thorgrim hit Zelrig with 2 skulls, but Zelrig blocked. Turn 3 – The Archers took 3 shots at a Mac, but he blocked them all. Thorgrim wounded Zelrig and a Mac took out another Archer.

Rd 5: Zelrig failed with his Special Attack. Thorgrim hit Zelrig with 3 skulls to kill the red dragon. Dad lost his OMs. The Macs killed a couple more Roman Archers. Momentum tilted back toward Jacob.
After 5 rounds, Dad had 1 Archer, 1 Izumi, and a 3-wound Tandros. Jacob had 5 Macs, Tarns, Finn, Thorgrim, and Eldgrim left. For the rest of the battle, Dad put every single OM on Tandros and hoped he could pull off some cleave magic.

Rd 6: Turn 1 - Dad won initiative. Tandros used cleave to take out two Macs. The Macs were only able to take out the last Archer. Turn 2 – Tandros put a wound on Thorgrim and killed a Mac with cleave. Thorgrim and a Mac fail in their attacks on Tandros. Turn 3 – Tandros cleaved again, killing Thorgrim and the last MacDirk. Wow! Jacob lost his OM.

Rd 7: Finn and Tandros moved to meet in the middle of the map. Tandros got off a couple of attacks and Finn, but no wounds were dished out.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0399
Tandros and Finn meet in the middle of the map. Can Tandros continue his magical ways?

Rd 8: Tandros hit Finn with 3 attacks this round, rolling 8 skulls in 13 dice – Finn finally fell on OM#3. Finn did hit Tandros twice, but couldn’t break through with only 2/8 skulls. To end the round, the Thorgrim/Finn spirit-boosted Tarns moved out, got a berserker charge, and hit Tandros for a wound.

Tandros and an Izumi were up against the Tarn and Eldgrim.

Rd 9: Turn 1 - Tandros rolled 4/5 skulls to kill a Tarn and then another with Cleave! The two remaining Tarns rolled 4/8 skulls on Tandros, who blocked both attacks by rolling 6/10 shields. Turn 2 – Tandros again rolled 4/5 skulls to kill both turns using Cleave. Wow – this guy is a stud today! Jacob lost both OMs. Turn 3 – Tandros shoots from range at Eldgrim for a wound.

Rd 10: Eldgrim sauntered over to Tandros and rolled 2/2 skulls, but Tandros blocked. Tandros hit Eldgrim with a 2/4 attack to kill the little Viking. Battle over.

    Final Score
With the Izumi and 4 wounds on Tandros, the Roman Archers had 71 points left and will move on to face the Wolfpack for the championship in a rematch.

Next up: Cinco de Mayo Championship

Battle 14 and maybe 15 @ Marr Highway and Volcalla Rift if necessary

Can you believe that Tandros could be such a stud? Me neither . . .

    Cinco de Mayo Championship

    Battle 14 @ Marr Highway
Roman Archers (Damon #1): Roman Archers x4, Zelrig, Tandros Kreel, Izumi Samurai = 585.
Varkaanans (Damon #4): Varkaanan Greyspears, Varkaanan Quickblades, Varkaanan Darkclaws, Varkaanan Swiftfangs, Arktos, Sylvan Animae x2 = 585.

Dad took his Roman Archers and let Jacob play the Varkaanans in this rematch of their very close first battle.

Rd 1: Dad sent forward the Archers on turn 1 and 2, followed by the Izumi on turn 3. Jacob went with all Swiftfangs and Greyspears as they tried to span the distance of the Marr Highway. No attacks in the round, but the wolfpack did land on the useless Revive glyph and on the Unique Attack +1.

Rd 2: Turn 1 – The Swiftfang charged into the Samurai – the managed to kill one, but another died from a counterstrike. The Archers podded up on the little hill and killed another Swiftfang. Turn 2 – A Greyspear took out one of the Archers. Two Izumi failed their attacks on a Swiftfang, who rolled 4 shields in 6 dice. Turn 3 – The Greyspears killed the last two Izumi from range while the Quickblades moved up. The Archers sent a volley of arrows to kill a Swiftfang.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0400
Swiftfangs charge the Samurai - will counterstrike work?

Rd 3: Turn 1 – The Roman Archers on the hill rolled 8/9 skulls in three attacks to kill 3 Greyspears! An Archer defended a Quickblade’s attack with a perfect 1/1 shield roll, but the last Swiftfang took out an Archer. Turn 2 – The Archers killed one of the Quickblade, who then proceeded to murder two of the Archers. Turn 3 – Zelrig flew forward a few spaces, rolled 1/3 with his special, and killed the last Swiftfang. The Quickblades took out another Archer and put a wound on Zelrig.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0401
Archers attacking from the hill . . . who said this was no good?

Rd 4: Turn 1 – Jacob won initiative, sent the Quickblades after Zelrig, and rolled 2/3 and 3/3 with their special attack. The poor red dragon whiffed on both defense rolls and died. What a very sad turn of events. The Archers sent a volley at one of the Quickblades but it was dodged. Turn 2 – The Quickblades and Greyspear killed 3 Archers. The Archers retreated to hide behind Tandros and killed a Quickblade with a 3/6 volley attack. Turn 3 – The Darkclaws moved out of their start zone while the last Greyspear moved to height. Tandros got into the action, rolled 3/4 skulls to kill the last Quickblade.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0402
Oh no . . . looks like the Roman Archers are in trouble . . .

After 4 rounds, Dad had Tandros and 3 Roman Archers while Jacob had a Greyspear, a full squad of Darkclaws, Arktos, and 6 Sylvan Animae.

Rd 5: Turn 1 - The Roman Archers moved up a bit, rolled 5/6 skulls in a volley that took out the last Greyspear to end the threat on Dad’s start zone. Jacob lost an OM. Turn 2 – The Archers move to the road as did Arktos and the Darkclaws. Turn 3 – Tandros moved to the road. The Wolfpack moved forward.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0403
    Battle on the highway . . .

Rd 6: Turn 1 - Tandros hit a Darkclaw with 2 skulls, but it was blocked. Arktos picked up the Elixer of Speed treasure while 2 Darkclaws hit Tandros with a total of 4 skulls, but Tandros blocked. Turn 2 – The Roman Archers moved up behind Tandros, fired a 4/6 skull volley on Arktos for 4 wounds when he whiffed in defense. Yes! Arktos threw a spear at Tandros who returned the favor by blanking his defense roll to earn 3 wounds. Turn 3 – The Archers took out a Darkclaw. Arktos and Darkclaws combined for 6 out of 11 skulls, but Tandros rolled wonderfully and only took 1 wound.

Rd 7: Arktos jabbed Tandros through the heart for a kill. The Darkclaws jumped in to kill 2 Archers. Dad lost an OM. Arktos took the head off of the last Archer for the win.

    Final Score
The Varkaanans win the Cinco de Mayo tournament with 179 points left in the championship game. The wolfpack join the Sacred Band as the only armies to go undefeated.

Spring Break-Out Tournament – 8 team double elimination tournament.

Derek and I started this tournament back in April and finished it up last weekend. I'll post the rounds as I get finished typing them up.

This tournament features the best field of the bunch so far, in my opinion.

Damon chose the Axegrinders first, Derek followed by selecting the Blade Gruts and then the Legionnaires, and then Damon rounded out the first round selections by taking the Pirates.

    Maps
Gardens of Athenoek (Custom by Derek) - RotV, TJx2
Drift (Custom by Derek) - BftU, TTx2
    To be determined

    Spring Break-Out Tournament – Round 1

    Battle 1 @ Drift
Wolves of Badru (Derek #2): Wolves of Badru x3 2/3, Werewolf Lord x2, Isamu = 583.
Protectors (Damon): Protectors of Ullar x3, Warriors of Ashra x1 2/3, Atlaga, Raelin v1 = 583.

Rd 1: A Warrior landed on the Negation glyph, rolled successfully, and negated one of the Werewolfs. That same WW grabbed the Healing Potion treasure at the center of the map. A wolf scampered over to the left side of the board to get the Common Attack +1 glyph. After the initial movements were out of the way, 2 wolves pounced to kill two Warriors of Ashra while the WW in the center took 3 quick wounds from Protectors.

Rd 2: The Protectors and WoB battled it out this round. The Protectors kill the WW on turn 2, and wiped out a total of 4 WoBs in the round, including the one on the glyph. The WoB killed 4 Protectors, including two on pounces. Derek was 4/4 with the leaping wolves so far.

Rd 3: Pounce fail – dead wolf. The second WWL snuck into the fray to kill a Protector while the WoBs did the trick killing the rest of the Protectors causing Damon to lose his 3rd OM. Raelin flew out to snag the healing potion treasure, but received a wound from a WoB. With all the Protectors gone and only 3 WoA left, things didn’t look too good for team Ullar.

Rd 4: Damon wins initiative, and sends the Warriors to kill a WoB and put a wound on the WWL, who takes another wound leaving engagement to go after Raelin, but he failed his attack. On Turn 2, Atlaga snuck out of the start zone, prepared his bolt, and fired away at the WWL, a perfect 20 roll landed squarely between the Werewolf’s eyes and he died instantly. Yea!! A little wolf pounced on a Warrior and killed her.

Rd 5: The Bolt of Witherwood turned the battle around. Raelin drank the potion and healed 3 wounds, Atlaga killed a couple more wolves and a third died failing a pounce.

Rd 6: It was down to Isamu against Raelin, Atlaga and 1 Warrior. Isamu sprints up to put a wound on Raelin, but Atlaga kills him when Isamu failed to vanish.

    Final Score
The Protectors of Ullar win with a total of 187 points left. Derek was extremely good with the Pounce, but the WWL getting negated and the other dying by the bolt was the difference in this entertaining battle.

    Battle 2 @ Drift
Legionnaires (Derek #3): Roman Legionnaires x4, Marcus Decimus Gallus, Arashara Goshiri, Martial La Hire, Jean de Ascalon= 590.
Wyrmlings (Damon): White Wyrmlingx3, Black Wyrmling x3, Red Wyrmling x3, Blue Wyrmling x3, Braxas = 585.

The Wyrmlings flew over to and gained the +2 Defense glyph, which the Wyrmlings would hold off and on for the first four rounds, until the mass of Romans finally took it over. The Romans would hold it off and on the rest of the way.

Marcus was sent out early for the Romans, and boy, was he a stud. Marcus took out 6 Wyrmlings on his own, including all 3 of the Reds, which had the Legionnaires trembling. Ashgari proved his mettle in the last three rounds after Marcus had fallen, killing 3 Wyrmlings on his own and putting 4 of the wounds on Braxus.

Braxus hung back in the start zone until round 6 and was only able to kill 4 Legionnaires before falling in the 7th round. Overwhelming numbers proved too much for the Wyrmlings to overcome as the Roman army won with 235 points left. Martial La Hire and Jean did need to move in this game.

Battle 3 @ Gardens of Athenoek
Axegrinders (Damon #1): Axegrinders of Burning Forge x3, Mok, Darrak Ambershard, Ulfrid Hornwrangler = 590.
Blade Gruts (Derek): Tornak, Grimnak, Ornak, Fenn Hydra, Blade Gruts x3 2/3 = 587.

Rd 1: Orcs and Dwarves were scurrying around the map. Mok loaded up with a couple of gunners. No attacks in the first round, but the battle lines were drawn. A Blade was able to discover the Attack +1 glyph.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0318
Mok and Grimnak and their riders go face-to-face

Rd 2: Damon, fearing the devastation that Grimnak might unless on his dwarves, decided to send Mok across the center stone bridge right after Grimnak. Mok killed a Blade. The Blades surround Mok and roll 10 skulls out of 14 dice to hit Mok with an astounding 7 wounds. Mok engaged Grimnak and killed him with one mighty blow and then the Gunners took out two blades. Derek fought back with the Blades (who were on the Attack +1 glyph and were receiving Ornaks bonus). In four attacks, Derek rolled 14/16 skulls on Mok who died despite rolling well enough with the 20-sider to have the two gunners absorb a good share of the skulls. The two heavy hitters of Mok and Grimnak were out of the game.

Rd 3: The Blades surged forward, killing a Grinder and putting a wound on Darrick. Darrick safely left engagement and snuck over to Tornak and took him out in one roll of 4/6 skulls. A Grinder took out the Blade on the glyph, but it was regained by another Blade to close the round.

Rd 4: The Fenn Hydra, through Ornak’s bonding, had moved to the left side of the board to protect the Blade on the glyph. A dwarf was able to remove one of the Hydra’s heads. Derek continued his hot rolling with the attack dice, rolling 14/16 skulls to kill Mr. Ambershard and a Grinder (6 of those being Utgar symbols). The dwarves hit the Hydra for two more wounds and killed a blade. Two more Grinders died at the hands of Ornak and the Gruts. Mr. Hornwrangler took out an orc, while a dwarf finished off the Fenn Hydra. Skulls kept falling from Derek’s hands as three more Grinders fell to end the round. Damon found himself down to Ulfred and 1 solitary Axegrinder.

Rd 5: The two dwarves took out 2 blades on OM#1. Ulfred took out Ornak on OM#2 but took two wounds in his repeated attacks. On OM#3, the Blade Gruts killed Ulfred, who whiffed in defense.

Rd 6: The last of the Axegrinders was killed.

    Final Score
Derek had 5 Blade Gruts left for a total of 50 points. Derek rolled with a hot hand most of the battle and the Attack +1 glyph certainly helped. The Blades move on in the winner’s bracket while the disappointed Axegrinders will try to regroup in a loser-out battle.

    Battle 4 @ Road Rampage
Pirates (Damon #4): Barbary Corsairs x4, Suds Merrick, Martial La Hire, Evar Scarcarver, Darrin Razorback = 590.
Valiant (Derek): Samuel Brown, 4th Massachusetts Line x4, Sgt. Drake Alexander V2, Thorgrim the Viking Champion = 590.

Rd 1: The Pirates gained control of the bridge early and found the Lucky 20-sider glyph. Suds put three wounds on Thorgrim, but took 4 wounds on two 2/2 skull attacks from the 4th – yep, Suds whiffed on defense both times. The 4th also took out a Pirate.

Rd 2: Suds and the Pirates on the bridge killed Thorgrim and 3 Bluecoats during the round. The 4th waited and then fired to kill two pirates on OM#1. Derek fired often at Suds, but didn’t kill him until OM#3.

Rd 3: Pirates roll 1/7 skulls in two attacks for no harm. Sammy Brown moved forward to kill a pirate. Darrin Razorbeak jumps into the middle of the action and the edge of the bridge to put a couple of wounds on Sammy. Two pirates roll 5/7 skulls to kill two bluecoats. The 4th respond by killing two pirates on the bridge as Damon could only roll 1/12 shields in defense. Mr. Razorbeak killed Sammy Brown with his double attack. The 4th ended the round by killing another pirate, but whiffed in three attacks on Darrin.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0367
Darrin plans some acrobatic maneuvers for Sammy Brown

Rd 4: Drake charged on the road to engage Darrin, rolling 4/6 skulls while the raptorian impressively defended with a perfect roll of 4 shields. Very nice! Darrin double attacked Drake for 2 wounds. Razorbeak then got all evasive, blocking 4 Wait and Fire attacks from the bluecoats. Drake blocked both of Darrin’s attacks. Darrin blocked 4 wait and fires again. Drake ended the round blocking Darrin’s attacks again. Impressive rolling of defense this round!

Rd 5: Darrin slammed Drake with 6 skulls in two attacks for 3 wounds. Drake swung hard and earned two wounds on Darrin. Darrin then bashed Drake for the kill – Derek lost an OM. Martial LaHire moved out to the base of the bridge while Damon’s remaining pirates killed a bluecoat. Derek waited and fired to kill 2 pirates leaving Damon with only 1 squad left.

Rd 6: LaHire charges up onto the bridge and recklessly kills two bluecoats while the pirate on the left side of the board kills another. Darrin blocked four more attacks from ranged patriots. Darrin kills a 4th. The bluecoats finally break through to kill Darrin and Pirate, leaving Damon with only 2 left. The Martial ended the round by killing another bluecoat on the bridge.

Rd 7: Damon hid his last two Pirates and let LaHire go to work. Sadly, LaHire couldn’t make any headway, getting his first attack blocked and whiffing on turn 2. The 4th put a wound on him on turn 1 and then took him out on turn 3. Bummer.

Rd 8: The 4th move to the edge of the bridge and fire down on Evar Scarcarver for 2 wounds. Evar sprints in and kills 2 of the bluecoats. The 4th rained 8 skulls in 9 dice down on Evar, but he amazingly defended all but one wound by rolling 8 shields in 19 total dice. Evar killed a 4th . . . but died on OM3 when he whiffed with 7 dice.

Rd 9: Down to 2 pirates against 2 bluecoats in a barn-burner. Damon wins initiative, but his pirates fail the attack. The 4th wait and fire, killing a pirate. The pirate fails again and then dies when he whiffs on defense.

    Final Score
Derek came out on top in this incredibly fun battle. With only 2 bluecoats left, Derek had 35 points.

    Customs Notes:
Darrin Razorbeak was worth about 200 points this game. Amazing with defense and he single-handedly took out Sgt. Drake. Very fun! Suds was able to put 3 wounds on Thorgrim and kill only one 4th – not quite worth his points. That low defense at the end of the round really hurt him. The Pirates played well . . . but I didn’t get to use the Plunder power. It was really good to be able to use Evar and LaHire as significant parts to an army.

That Pirate vs. Valiant game was incredible. Damon played the Pirates very well. Love the Mok/Grimnak picture.

Spring Break Out Tournament – Round 2

Battle 5 @ Gardens of Athenoek
Blade Gruts (Derek): Tornak, Grimnak, Ornak, Fenn Hydra, Blade Gruts x3 2/3 = 587.
Protectors (Damon): Protectors of Ullar x3, Warriors of Ashra x1 2/3, Atlaga, Raelin v1 = 583.

Rd 1: Damon sent out the Warriors and the Protectors. Derek moved forward with Blades and bonders, earning the +2 move glyph and the Initiative +8 glyph.

Rd 2: Protectors kill a couple of Blades. Tornak and a Blade kill a couple of Protectors. Raelin swoops forward to offer protection for the Protectors and kills a Blade. Grimnak chomped a Warrior of Ashra, a Blade killed a Protector on the left side of the map, and then 2 Blades put 2 wounds on Raelin, who whiffed on both defense rolls. The Warriors of Ashra killed 2 Blades and put a wound on Tornak to close the round.

Rd 3: Damon wins initiative and tries to stem the orc swarm, but the Protectors fail on all three attacks. Ornak takes a turn with two heroes - Grimnak safely leaves engagement  and chomps a Protector and then kills a Warrior who whiffed on defense and then Tornak puts another wound Raelin while Damon couldn’t roll a stinking shield. Protectors fire away at Grimnak for 4 wounds! Grimnak chomps + Blades attack = dead Raelin, 2 dead Protectors. Protectors kill Grimnak and a Blade. Derek ends the round with Tornak and the Blades killing the last 3 Protectors . . . ouch.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0370
Tornak and the Gruts prepare to charge into the last Protectors

Rd 4: The Warriors of Ashra fail in their attacks. Tornak and the Blades sneak into Damon’s start zone and put two wounds on Atlaga, and then kill a WoA. A blade falls to a WoA. Tornak kills Atlaga before he could take a turn and Damon loses an OM. A Blade kills a WoA . . . only one is left.

Rd 5: Tornak kills the last WoA to end this slaughter.

    Final Score
One-life Tornak, Fenn Hydra, Ornak and 8 Blade Gruts totaled 333 points left on the board for Derek. The Blade Gruts move on in the winner’s bracket while the Protectors fall into the loser’s bracket.

    Battle 6 @ Road Rampage
Legionnaires (Derek #3): Roman Legionnaires x4, Marcus Decimus Gallus, Arashara Goshiri, Martial La Hire, Jean de Ascalon= 590.
Valiant (Derek): Samuel Brown, 4th Massachusetts Line x4, Sgt. Drake Alexander V2, Thorgrim the Viking Champion = 590.

Derek chose to play his Romans. Damon got the Valiant army.

Rd 1: Derek let out with Jean. Damon took control of the bridge with the 4th and killed Jean on OM#2. Romans and Arashara moved up. The 4th waited and fired from the bridge but could only kill one Roman. Arashara killed a 4th on the bridge to end the round.

Rd 2: A Bluecoat landed on the Massive Curse glyph. Damon rolled the 20-sider 38 times, but failed to kill a single figure. The 4th and Romans took turns killing one of each other. Arashara shifted same sand, killed a 4th, and then the Romans moved up to take control of the bridge. The Romans defended 4 Wait and Fire attacks with lots of shields as they stood shoulder to shoulder with height. Arashara shift some sand on Thorgrim, who the Romans promptly surrounded and killed. Thorgrim went on Drake’s card.

Rd 3: Arashara killed a 4th on the left side of the map. The Romans rolled 6/6 skulls on Drake for 2 wounds as they pushed towards Damon’s start zone. The Romans again successfully defended against 4 attacks of 3 dice. Arashara shifted sands again, swapping places with Drake, he kills a 4th, and then the Romans put two wounds on Sammy Brown. The 4th finally were able to break through the Romans defense because they were a little more spread out, killing three with Wait and Fire. Ashara killed Sammy (Damon lost an OM) and the Romans killed another Bluecoat.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0371
Legionnaires push into the Bluecoat start zone

Rd 4: Damon won initiative and killed Arashara with the 4th – phew! More Romans moved to the bridge. Drake backed up into the start zone and killed the last Roman who was camped out there.

Rd 5: Drake put 2 wounds on Marcus and then The 4th continued their hot rolling by killing Marcus on the next turn. Sgt. Drake managed to block 6 attacks before taking a wound on OM#3 (Drake was down to his last life). The Romans on the bridge were able to dodge 3 attacks from the 4th.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0372
Drake finds himself in a bit of trouble

Rd 6: The Romans killed Drake on OM#1 (Damon lost an OM) and then they killed a Bluecoat. The 4th start moving to the sides of the bridge and take out a couple of Romans to close the round.

Rd 7: Martial LaHire was forced into action for Derek’s army after a 4th killed another Roman. The 4th waited and fired to put 2 wounds on Martial and then Martial killed a 4th.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0373
Martial and the Romans charge into the last two 4th

Rd 8: LaHire fails in his attack. The 4th put two more wounds on him. Romans move. The 4th kill LaHire and 2 Romans as Derek whiffed twice in defense.

Rd 9: It was down to 2 Roman Legionnaires against 2 4th Mass Line. Damon kept his distance, trying to pick off Romans from range while moving toward the small hill on the right side of the map. One of each were killed this round, as there were many whiffs on attacks and many shields on defense.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0374
The last Bluecoat is sitting on height only a couple spaces away from the last Roman.

Rd 10: Derek won initiative – the Roman engaged the 4th and rolled 3/3 skulls. The 4th rolled 2/3 shield and died.

Damon and Derek both giggled and grinned with the fun they had with this battle.

    Final Score
The solitary Roman left on the battlefield earned Derek a 13-point victory. The Romans move on in the winner’s bracket to take on the other undefeated team, the Blade Gruts. The 4th fall into the loser’s bracket.

    Battle 7 @ Drift
Axegrinders (Damon #1): Axegrinders of Burning Forge x3, Mok, Darrak Ambershard, Ulfrid Hornwrangler = 590.
Wolves of Badru (Derek #2): Wolves of Badru x3 2/3, Werewolf Lord x2, Isamu = 583.

Rd 1: A dwarf landed on the Negation glyph and promptly removed the powers of one of the Werewolf Lords. A gunner rolled a perfect 3/3 for 2 wounds on the WwL from range. A wolf killed a dwarf while another landed on the Defense +2 glyph. The WwL ended the round by engaging Mok and attacking for 2 wounds.

Rd 2: Damon rolled 10 skulls in 12 dice for Darrak and a couple of dwarves to kill two wolves and put another wound on the WwL. The WwL took out a gunner. Mr. Ambershard whiffed on defense with 8 dice for three wounds inflicted by the wolves. Ambershard killed another wolf, but the Axegrinders failed in three attacks. Another dwarf died at the paws of a wolf and then Mok put another wound on the WwL.

Rd 3: Derek’s WwL took out another gunner and Ambershard fell to the wolves. Three Axegrinders fail their attacks. The wolves took out a dwarf and then Derek successfully pounced to kill another. Ulfred came out to play, killing a wolf with a 4/4 skull roll. The WwL hit Mok hard for 3 wounds. Derek rolled 4/5 skulls and 5/5 skulls for two pounces (now 3 for 3 with the pounce). Mok rolled 4/7 skulls on the WwL, who rolled 4/8 shields.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0369
Mok and the Dwarves against the steadfast Werewolf Lord

Rd 4: Ulfred, trying to protect Mok, charged into the WwL. He finally managed to kill the big hybrid, but was dealt two wounds on himself. The dwarves were able to kill 2 wolves and one jumped on Mok as a gunner. Finally a decent turn for Damon. The wolves killed two more dwarves, one on a pounce (Derek was now 4 for 4 on pounces). Mok took out a wolf. Derek pulled off two more pounces with 3/5 and 4/5 skull rolls to kill Ulfred and Damon’s last Axegrinder. Damon lost an OM. Derek tried a pounce on Mok, but failed for the first time (now 6 for 7).

Heading into round 5, Damon had a 2-life Mok with a gunner and Derek had a Werewolf Lord, 3 Wolves of Badru, and Isamu.

Rd 5: Mok blocked a couple of attacks and then rolled 5/8 skulls for 2 wounds on the WwL. Mok rolled 5/11 shield to block attacks from the WwL and a wolf. The wolf tried a pounce on the mighty Mok . . . Derek rolled only 2/5 skulls . . . Mok whiffed and died.

    Final Score:
Derek had 183 points remaining. The Wolves of Badru will advance in the loser’s bracket while the tough luck Axegrinders are eliminated. That +2 Defense glyph was just too much for the dwarves to overcome . . . plus, Derek’s 7 out of 8 successful pounces was pretty darn impressive to see.

    Battle 8 @ Road Rampage
Pirates (Damon #4): Barbary Corsairs x4, Suds Merrick, Martial La Hire, Evar Scarcarver, Darrin Razorback = 590.
Wyrmlings (Damon): White Wyrmlingx3, Black Wyrmling x3, Red Wyrmling x3, Blue Wyrmling x3, Braxas = 585.

Damon went with the Pirates. Jacob took the Wyrmlings.

Rd 1: Dad went with all LaHire as his Corsairs bonding hero, but couldn’t get an attack off. A Corsair did land on the Range +4 glyph. Jacob went with all Braxas in the round, who picked up the Disengage treasure glyph before flying up to the bridge. Braxas rolled an 18, 19, and then 20 with his acid breath to take out three Corsairs.

Rd 2: A couple of blue wyrmlings rolled 18 and 20 to put two wounds on LaHire. LaHire hit Braxas for a wound. The blue wyrmlings killed LaHire. From 9 spaces away, Suds Merrick rolled 2/4 skulls to put two wounds on Braxas. The Corsairs failed two attacks on the blue wyrmlings. Braxas acid breathed two more Corsairs. Suds rolled 3/5 skulls for 3 more wounds on Braxas, who whiffed in defense again while a Corsair took out a blue wyrmling.

Rd 3: Suds hit Braxas 3/3 skulls for another wound on Braxas. The Pirates used their plunder power to steal the disengage glyph from Braxas! And then they killed the big black dragon. Jacob lost all 3 OMs for the round. Evar moved up to the bridge, picked up the treasure, while the Corsairs sprinted toward Jacob’s startzone, killing a red and a blue wyrmling.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0464
Corsairs charge into the Wyrmling's start zone

Rd 4: The Corsairs got all patriotic by killing 3 wyrmlings – a red, a white, and a blue. Suds killed another white on turn 2. The wyrmlings fought back though, taking out 4 Corsairs and putting 3 wounds on Suds in the round.

Rd 5: Despite some poor dice rolls in the round, the wyrmlings killed a couple more Corsairs, leaving dad with only 1 left, and they put another wound on Suds. Suds was able to kill two wyrmlings and a Corsair took out another one, leaving Jacob with only one left to end the round.

Rd 6: Suds fired a 3/4 skull roll from the bridge to take out the last wyrmling.

    Final Score
The Pirates stayed alive in the tournament, finishing with 212 points. Suds Merrick had one life left, Evar and Darrin were at full life, and there was a solitary Corsair left on the board. The wyrmlings met their downfall and elimination when Braxas couldn’t roll defense dice and by losing all three OMs in round 3.

    Customs Notes
Suds was pretty good – especially when the pirates were sitting on the +4 range glyph. The Corsairs did their job and it was cool to see the Plunder power finally work. Darrin didn’t participate.

    Next up: Round 3

Very cool battle report!!! I am getting jealous of all these awesome tournaments : P

One thing to note is that Wolves of Badru can only Pounce small or medium figures. Probably wouldn't have changed the battle much except for a few Mok pounces.

    Thanks.

As mentioned before, you are more than welcome to join in a tournament as a full-fledged participant or just pick up a battle or two. Just let me know if you want in.

Yes - we are aware of the limitations to Pounce, none were attempted on Mok . . . I remember paying attention to this. I think I must have mistyped the report or probably didn't pay close enough attention when Derek snuck the pounces in. I think we should replay the entire tournament due to inattention on my part or mistyping the report.

Funny! I can remember saying that you couldn't pounce the big fella at the time, but that must have been before we had our first light beer. Plus, that was way back in April.

No replays allowed, I was just teasing. Once in the tournaments, I ran a whole battle thinking a C3V squad had 3 figures when it actually had 4 (I lost, obviously), and then there was that battle with the Quasatch when I forgot . . . this is how I learn.

    Spring Break-Out Tournament – Round 3

    Battle 9 @ Drift
    Legionnaires (Derek #3):
Roman Legionnaires x4, Marcus Decimus Gallus, Arashara Goshiri, Martial La Hire, Jean de Ascalon= 590.
Blade Gruts (Derek): Tornak, Grimnak, Ornak, Fenn Hydra, Blade Gruts x3 2/3 = 587.

Derek decided to take his Blade Gruts and Jacob took the Legionnaires.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0465
Marcus Decimus Gallus and the wall of shields

In this war of attrition, the Romans used their Shield Wall to perfection – slowing the Blades. Arashara did well, but got chomped by Grimnak in the 4th round. Marcus provided enough extra attack dice for the Legionnaires to come out on top after 8 rounds.

    Final Score
The Legionnaires move into the championship with the 176 point victory. Five Legionnaires, Martial La Hire, Jean de Ascalon, and a 2-life Marcus were left standing. The Blade Gruts will take on whoever comes out of the loser’s bracket.

    Customs Notes

Jean didn’t do much of anything.

    Battle 10 @ If you can’t take the heat . . .
    Wolves of Badru (Derek #2):
    Wolves of Badru x3 2/3, Werewolf Lord x2, Isamu = 583.
Valiant (Derek): Samuel Brown, 4th Massachusetts Line x4, Sgt. Drake Alexander V2, Thorgrim the Viking Champion = 590.

Derek took the Wolves of Badru, allowing Jacob to play with the Valiant army.

Jacob sent out his 4th early and often. Derek decided to Pounce whenever the opportunity arose, trying to close ground on the ranged bluecoats to keep them from sitting back and picking of the wolves.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0468
"Huh, how did that huge wolf sneak into our start zone?"

What happens when Pounce works less than 20% of the time? Yep – you get blown out. Although it took seven rounds, the Valiant army rolled.

    Final Score
Jacob had 7 4th Linemen and all of his heroes were at full-life for an amazing 443 points left on the board. The Wolves of Badru are eliminated while the Valiant army lives to fight another day.

    Battle 11 @ Drift
    Protectors (Damon):
    Protectors of Ullar x3, Warriors of Ashra x1 2/3, Atlaga, Raelin v1 = 583.
Pirates (Damon #4): Barbary Corsairs x4, Suds Merrick, Martial La Hire, Evar Scarcarver, Darrin Razorback = 590.

Damon went the Pirates while Jacob took the Protectors.

Rd 1: A pirate lands on the Thorian glyph and put two wounds on Raelin. The Warriors of Ashra killed two pirates, including the one on the glyph.

Rd 2: The Warriors take the Thorian glyph, land on the Summoning glyph (and bring Suds Merrick into trouble), and then proceed to put 3 wounds on LaHire. Suds takes a wound to leave engagement and rolls 3/3 skulls to put a wound on Raelin and then a Pirate kills the Warrior on Thorian. Two Protectors kill Suds using the Combined Arbalest. LaHire fails his attack, but the Pirates get back on Thorian. The Protectors took out LaHire with three attacks. Darrin Razorbeak and more Pirates move out of the start zone to close the round.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0467
Protectors prepare to blast Suds, who got a little reckless

Rd 3: The Pirates couldn’t break through with any wounds this round, but the Protectors managed to kill three Pirates, including the one on Thorian.

Rd 4: Two Protector attacks on Razorbeak kills him quick. Evar and the remaining Pirates move into retreat mode. Another Pirate and one Protector fall by the end of the round.

Rd 5: Combined Arbalest works its magic again as the Protectors take out Evar in one turn rolling 3 dice, then 5, and then 7. Ouch. The Pirates managed to kill a Protector but three more of them died, leaving Dad with only 2 left.

Rd 6: The Protectors killed the last two Pirates on OM#1. Battle over.

    Final Score
The Protectors of Ullar had 425 points left in this route and will move on to face the Valiant army. The Pirates are sent home.

    Customs Notes
Jacob used the Combined Arbalest to perfection, minimizing the impact of the Reckless heroes. The Pirates could do little without effective bonding options as the ranged attacks and Raelin’s aura proved too much.

    Next up:

    Battle 12 @ If you can’t take the heat . . .
    Protectors (Damon):
    Protectors of Ullar x3, Warriors of Ashra x1 2/3, Atlaga, Raelin v1 = 583.
Valiant (Derek): Samuel Brown, 4th Massachusetts Line x4, Sgt. Drake Alexander V2, Thorgrim the Viking Champion = 590.

    Battle 13 @ TBA
    Blade Gruts (Derek):
Tornak, Grimnak, Ornak, Fenn Hydra, Blade Gruts x3 2/3 = 587.
    Winner of Battle 12

    Battle 14 and maybe 15 @ TBA

Legionnaires (Derek #3): Roman Legionnaires x4, Marcus Decimus Gallus, Arashara Goshiri, Martial La Hire, Jean de Ascalon= 590.
    Winner of Battle 13.

    Spring Break-Out Tournament – Semi-Final

    Battle 13 @ Drift
    Blade Gruts (Derek):
Tornak, Grimnak, Ornak, Fenn Hydra, Blade Gruts x3 2/3 = 587.
Valiant (Derek): Samuel Brown, 4th Massachusetts Line x4, Sgt. Drake Alexander V2, Thorgrim the Viking Champion = 590.

Derek decided to play his Blade Gruts. Jacob took the Valiant Army. Winner advances to take on the Legionnaires in the championship.

Rd 1: A Blade flips the Negation glyph, which Derek decides to put on Thorgrim. The 4th put 2 wounds on Tornak. “Snikies,” Derek responded. Tornak then went on a kamikaze run to kill a 4th while a Blade did the same.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0472
No more defense bonus from Thorgrim!

Rd 2: The 4th wait and then fire to kill Tornak and a couple of Blades. Grimnak and Blades move forward . . . “Bring it on, Chompy,” Jacob retorted. After a few turns of positioning, Grimnak picked up the Whetstone of Venom glyph. And then four 4th shoot down on Grimnak, killing the dinosaur and his rider on one turn. “That’s ouchy,” Derek pouted. To make matters worse, the Blades followed by failing all four of their attacks to end the round.

Rd 3: Many hand-to-hand fisticuffs this round resulted in many dead Blade Gruts and a few dead 4th.

Rd 4: The Blades turned the table this round, taking out a bunch of 4th as they continued to disengage to get advantageous spots on the map. Ornak took a couple of wounds, but Drake took three.

Rd 5: The 4th did their job this round by killing Ornak and a number of Gruts. After 5 rounds, Jacob had a 1/2 life Drake, a once-wounded  Thorgrim, Sammy Brown, and a full squad of 4th Mass. Derek only had 3 Blades and the Fen Hydra. Things did not look good for the orcs.

Rd 6: Derek was able to kill Drake on turns one and two with the Blades, but they all ended up dying by the end of the round from the 4th attacks. The Hydra moved forward to end the round.

"Wait until you see the whites of its eyes. I mean its eyes. I mean its eyes . . ."

Rd 7: All 4th versus Hydra this round. The 4th managed one wound, but 3 of them died trying.

Rd 8: Things went south for Valiant this round. Derek won initiative, killed the last 4th and put a wound on Thorgrim. Jacob lost an OM. The Hydra then killed Thorgrim on turn 2 and Jacob lost another OM. The Hydra went after Sammy, rolling 6/12 skulls in three attacks, but Sammy was able to spin shields and only took one wound.

Rd 9: Sammy safely left engagement to climb to height, but whiffed on his attack on the Hydra. It took all three heads, but the Hydra ended the battle by taking out Sammy. What a battle!

    Final Score
With a 3-headed Hydra remaining, the Blades finished with 90 points and will advance to play the Legionnaires again. But, they must beat them twice to become tournament champions.

    Spring Break-Out Tournament – Championship

    Battle 14 @ Road Rampage
    Legionnaires (Derek #3):
Roman Legionnaires x4, Marcus Decimus Gallus, Arashara Goshiri, Martial La Hire, Jean de Ascalon= 590.
Blade Gruts (Derek): Tornak, Grimnak, Ornak, Fenn Hydra, Blade Gruts x3 2/3 = 587.

Derek decided to continue to play with his Blade Gruts. Damon took the Legionnaires.

Rd 1: A Blade stumbled upon the massive curse glyph. After 40 some rolls of the 20-sider, a Blade and 2 Romans were dead. Derek sent out the Hydra. Marcus killed a Blade on the bridge, allowing a couple of Romans to get through and engage the Hydra from height . . . rolls of 4/5 and 4/4 were enough to take out the Hydra. Ouch. Will the Romans roll to victory?

Romans easily take care of the Hydra

Rd 2: Here comes Grimnak! Tornak, Grimnak, and the Blades did some chomping, slicing, and dicing to kill three Romans. Grimnak topped things off by chewing up Marcus Decimas Gallus! Tornak defended five attacks from Romans before finally taking a wound.

Marcus proved to be a tasty morsel for Grimnak

Rd 3: Tornak and the Blades went crazy killing 5 Romans, including one turn where the Blades rolled 2/2 skulls in three consecutive rolls. Arashara and the Romans retreated to the little hill on the left before killing three charging orcs. Tornak was sitting in the Roman start zone at the end of the round.

Rd 4: Arashara and the Romans failed on 9 consecutive attacks before finally getting a wound on Tornak. Grimnak, Tornak and the Blades managed to take out 4 more Romans.

The Romans draw the final battle line

Rd 5: Tornak and the Blades continued their roll, killing the last two Romans and putting a wound on LaHire. Arashara was able to take out three Blades in the round.

Rd 6: Tornak rolled 4/4 skulls to kill Jean de Ascalon in one attack and LaHire earned 3 wounds in the round. Just trying to survive, LaHire and Arashara each killed a Blade.

Rd 7: LaHire finally put down super-stud Tornak, but then died at the swords of the Blades. On the next turn, 3 Blades rolled 3 consecutive attacks of 2/2 skulls to kill poor Arashara and end the battle.

    Final Score
The Blade Gruts had 250 points remaining in Grimnak, Ornak, and 3 Blades. Looks like another battle to determine the championship of the Spring Break-out tournament . . .

    Battle 15 @ If you can’t take the heat . . .
    Legionnaires (Derek #3):
Roman Legionnaires x4, Marcus Decimus Gallus, Arashara Goshiri, Martial La Hire, Jean de Ascalon= 590.
Blade Gruts (Derek): Tornak, Grimnak, Ornak, Fenn Hydra, Blade Gruts x3 2/3 = 587.

Rd 1: Lots of positioning to start things off. Tornak picked up the Elixer of Speed glyph. The Romans went left and center on the map.

Rd 2: Tornak and the Blades went crazy again for the second game in a row, killing 4 Romans and Arashara (who was hit by two consecutive 3/3 skull rolls on turn 2 from Blades). A Blade flipped over the Defense +2 glyph. In 14 total attacks, Arashara and the Romans were able to kill 5 Blades and put 2 wounds on Tornak, who ended the round in the Roman start zone once again. A Blade died from too much lava.

Tornak and Romans engage on the fields of lava

Rd 3: All Tornak and Blades as they combined to kill 3 Romans, put 3 wounds on LaHire, and a wound on Marcus. Marcus were able to take control of the Defense +2 glyph at the end of the round by as the Romans killed a couple of Blades that were in their way of their long march. Marcus took another wound for the lava field the glyph was sitting on.

Rd 4: The Romans were able to finally kill Tornak this round. The Blades were only able to put a wound on LaHire and Jean thanks to those extra dice on defense, but Marcus took another wound from the lava field after the round.

Rd 5: LaHire and the Romans killed six Blade Gruts and were finally able to clear their start zone by the end of the round. Grimnak chomped a couple Romans, a Blade killed another, and lava field claimed yet another.

Romans muster their courage to charge and kill three gruts

Rd 6: A Roman killed a Blade. Marcus came off the glyph to attack Grimnak from height but failed both of his attacks. The Hydra killed a Roman and then Grimnak chomped the last two.

Rd 7: Grimnak plodded over to the Defense +2 glyph while the Hydra killed Marcus. Damon lost an OM. Lots of moving around occurred – LaHire picked up the Elixer and killed a Blade. Grimnak took a wound from lava as the round closed.

The Big Final Tournament of 2014 - Page 5 IMG_0481
LaHire prepares to accept his fate . . .

Rd 8: LaHire went after Ornak for 2 wounds and he killed the last Blade. The Hydra finally killed LaHire and Grimnak took another wound from the lava field.

Rd 9: Jean de Ascalon was able to take a head off the Hydra with a 2/2 skull roll before the Hydra mercifully ended the battle.

    Final Score
The Blade Gruts are champions! A total of 198 points were left standing in variously wounded Grimnak, Ornak, and Hydra. The Blades secured a spot in the tournament of champions. Valiant and Legionnaires are each hoping for a wild card spot.
